Russel Newman is a local Melbourne abstract painter. Russel’s manifesto is to pursue his passion for landscape painting outdoors and continue to explore our beautiful country.
Onsite in “Plein Air”, Russel works quickly to capture an immediate response to seize the energy of the landscape, using gouache, charcoal and pastel. He’ll often complete many sketches and versions at each location.
Russel’s work in oils, and sometimes acrylic, is a culmination of the gathered source material, experiences and memory. His work has been described as “cross over” contemporary landscape.
“I spend time to connect to a place - the country and landscape, people and elements. I then try to distil the essence of this experience with my personal response into a painterly contemporary expression through my painting.” - Russel Newman
