‘The composure of stoicism, be it mind or body, can appear paradoxical. Even the tightly
bound stoics amongst us can experience an unravelling. The shroud motif
demonstrates this transition, as in the diptych The Rise and Fall of a Stoic, where on
the left a poised figure is bound into an organised assemblage, seeking security in
their covering and shadowed corner, while on the right there is an undoing and
